Early Music Ensemble: Ref EM041505This leading medieval band, based in the South West, presents early music in a new and exciting way. Evoking the spirit of Medieval Europe with music, masks, dance and giant stilt puppets, they give powerful displays of colour, movement and sound. Based around carefully researched music, they bring to life images inspired by medieval paintings, carvings and literature.
They are equally at home at street festivals as they are at corporate events and private parties and their music fires the imagination. Performances can include stunning masked dancing, giant puppets and elements of circus, based on medieval carvings and paintings. They have a special interest in dances and popular dance songs of 13th to 14th century Europe and play authentic instruments with fabulous names—crumhorn, dulcimer and hurdy-gurdy—as well as Border bagpipes, recorders, harps and whistles. Added to this heady brew are the beautiful voices of their singers. When they play live they wear flamboyant costumes that help to bring the period and music alive. They have pig men, giants, devils on stilts, men in bear costumes, hobby horse unicorns, acrobats, dancers and more characters that add to the delirious revels. The band is one of most admired in the area of early music, bringing both knowledge of the era and humour into their live work. Anybody who enjoys Medieval music will agree that they are at the peak of the style. Here we have a band that goes beyond entertainment and offers us an insight back to the Merrie England of our imagination. "From the first plaintive note of the pipes to the very last echo of the drum, their music always touches my heart and thrills my soul. The magical world they conjure is one I'd happily spend my life wandering in, full of mythical beasts, madcap fools, a marvelously sensuous unicorn and a shy dancing pig who steals your heart. The dance performances are sheer magic, the music is nothing less than superb. And although they bring an innovative contemporary touch to their material,it is none the less rooted in first rate scholarship."
